Cape Cod man contracts rabies

Veterinarians always stress the importance of vaccinating your pets, especially with the rabies vaccine. Rabies may seem like a disease that is not really a threat in the US, but it is still commonly found in wild animals, even in Massachusetts. A Massachusetts man has contracted rabies from what officials think is a common brown bat in his home.

While this is a rare case where the bite was wild animal to human, we vaccinate our pets to create a stronger barrier between humans and possibly rabid wild animals such as bats, raccoons, and foxes. The Unites States has one of the lowest occurrences of people infected with rabies because most states require mandatory vaccinations for domestic pets capable of contracting the disease.

Rabies in Massachusetts is on the decline according to Public Health officials but is clearly still a risk as seen in this case of a Massachusetts man contracting the disease right around the holidays.
